  REVIEW:

Letters from Iwo Jima . . . or, as the Japanese refer to the 8 square mile island . . . Iwo Jima.

This movie is very unique in that it was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg who directed and produced Flags of Our Fathers.  They filmed this movie back-to-back with Flags of our Fathers using many of the same sets and locations.  As they say, there are always two sides to every story and this is the story of the battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese point of view.  Although the story is told with sub-titles, you quickly become engaged in the lives of the Japanese soldiers and their determination to keep the island of Iwo Jima.  The story centers around the experiences of a General and of a new soldier.  Each determined to serve their country with honor while facing heart wrenching choices of life and death.

Flags of Our Fathers was a good movie, Letters from Iwo Jima is an even better movie.  But, when you consider the two movies together, they represent an astonishing, brilliant set of work.  Showing the same epic event from opposite perspectives in two movies proves to be quite profound.  And, the real power of Letters is that it doesn't just show you the Japanese perspective, you live it!  You become one of the very same characters you despised in Flags of Our Fathers.  And, in doing so, you understand their fears, their motivation, and their very horrific situation - so much so that a part of you is actually rooting for them by
the end.  Letters from Iwo Jima provides a rare glimpse, both into the hearts and minds of the enemy, as well as into your ability to empathize, thus offering a unique and powerful movie experience.
